Background
The “Second National Communication to the UNFCCC for Serbia” project aims to enable the Republic of Serbia to prepare, produce and disseminate its Second National Communication (SNC) to the Conference of the Parties (CoP) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) according to Decision 17/CP8 and other guidance provided. The SNC will update and strengthen information provided regarding national circumstances, greenhouse gas inventories, climate change mitigation, vulnerability to climate change and steps taken to adapt to climate change, and information on public awareness, education, training, systematic research and observation, and technology transfer.
The preparation of the SNC will support achievement of the national environmental objectives in several ways:
- It will enhance the ability of Serbia to participate actively in addressing the global environmental threat of climate change;
- It will develop capacity in climate change-related research and analysis that can support effective environmental policies and provide important data related to environmental challenges to sustainable development in Serbia that go beyond climate change; and
- It will provide improved information and analysis for policies in key areas, such as water resources, agriculture, and forestry.
Duties and responsibilities
1. Dynamical downscaling, with regional climate model, of minimum two IPCC SRES scenarios A1B and A2 for territory of Republic of Serbia and for time period 2000-2100 together with base period integration 1950-2000. Regional model resolution spatial should be at least 25km and time resolution should be 6h.
2. Statistical processing of raw model outputs to ensure removing of systematic model errors following some of relevant statistical methods (bias correction, quintal mapping etc.) enabling bias-free input data for different impact models that will be used for vulnerability assessment in different sectors. This should be applied for daily mean, maximum and minimum temperature and daily-accumulated precipitation.
3. Preparation of maps of temperature and precipitation changes for time periods 2011-2040, 2041-2070 and 2071-2100, on annual and seasonal level.
4. Preparation of maps of climate indices changes for: FD - frost days, SU - summer days, TR - tropical nights, GSL - growing season length, CDD - consecutive dry days, CWD - consecutive wet days, indices for same time periods.
Timing and coordination
Start from the outset. To be prepared before vulnerability and adaptation activities.
