Skip Navigation LinksHome - Item
Deadline: 19-09-2013 Location: Kosovo Back

Background

The 2011 UNDP Human Development Report provides overwhelming evidence that humanity is reaching an upper limit to emit greenhouse gases without dire consequences. It has been estimated that stabilizing the greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that prevents catastrophic climate change will require a 50% reduction of the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) emissions by 2050 from 1990 levels. Both in the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and EU policy framework there is a push for countries to develop long term strategies on the transformation of their economies addressing climate change mitigation objectives. These political goals are necessitated by the imperative to avoid dangerous climate change. For that purpose developed countries need to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions significantly and developing countries should limit the growth of their greenhouse gas emissions in connection with their economic development.
