Freedom of expression is essential for a functioning democracy. Free access to information and the liberty to express one’s views freely are important elements to ensure citizens can participate in public debate and decision making in a well-informed manner. Access to information has become one of the fundamental human rights in the contemporary, global world. In order to stimulate a more diverse, pluriform media environment in Macedonia, it is important to provide opportunities to independent media initiatives (be it via the existing media or via new outlets) to establish themselves. Therefore the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands creates a fund to provide start-up financing for new independent media initiatives committed to professional, responsible and ethical journalism with the objective to eventually become commercially sustainable. For this purpose a fund is created .
