Background
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD or the Bank) is financing a loan to the Macedonian Railways Transport JSC Skopje (MRT), a national railway joint stock company responsible for the transportation of passengers and freight by rail within Republic of Macedonia. The key business purpose of the transaction is to enhance the efficiency of passenger and freight services, and thus improve the overall performance of railway operations in Macedonia. In mid-2007, a major step in railway sector reform in the country was successfully completed with the former Public Enterprise Macedonian Railways Ltd Skopje (MR) divided into two separate independent entities: PE MR Infrastructure Skopje (PERI), which acts as manager and operator of the railway infrastructure and Macedonian Railway Transport JSC Skopje MRT, which acts as a railway undertaking.
A Business Segmentation Strategy will be developed and coordinated by Ministry of Transport and Communication (MOTC), and implemented by MRT resulting in the separation of the Company's business lines in separate legal entities by 2017.
