SCIENCE WITHOUT BORDERS CHALLENGE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Description

Science without Borders Challenge is a yearly science competition that engages secondary students to promote public awareness of the need to preserve, protect, and restore the world’s oceans and aquatic resources through various forms of media, such as science videos and art projects.

Throughout the world coral reefs are rapidly declining due to anthropogenic (human induced) and natural threats. Many scientists predict that we have already lost 19% of the original area of coral reefs. They also predict that if people don’t start making changes, than within the next 10-20 years, 15% of coral reefs will be seriously threatened with loss; and 20% will be under threat of loss in 20-40 years (Status of Coral Reefs in the World 2008).

Coral reefs are important ecosystems that harbor nearly 25% of all marine species. They also provide a food supply and livelihoods for millions of people around the world. There are many different actions that we can take in order to aid in slowing down the degradation of coral reefs. The artwork should creatively portray one of these actions.


Eligibility

The contest is open to 14-19 year-old from US and international secondary schools.


Awards

The organizers offer three prizes for the contest:

   - 1st Place: $300 scholarship and iPad Mini
   - 2nd Place: iPad Mini
   - 3rd Place: $250 scholarship
