Background

The Strategic Peace and Unity Facilitation Support for Bosnia and Herzegovina Project is centered on the deployment of a Peace and Development Advisor (PDA) to support the UN Country Team (UNCT) in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H) to address some of the critical issues (inter-ethnic reconciliation, education, cultural and youth exchanges) which will determine Bosnia and Herzegovina’s future; and which represent potential “roadblocks” to future peaceful coexistence within the country, and in the region. The Peace and Development Specialist will provide programme support to the PDA in the implementation of the project’s activities.


Responsibilities

   - Mainstream conflict prevention and peace building concepts into ongoing and new development programs or other initiatives of the UNCT
     in B&H. Particular attention will be given to local / municipal level peacebuilding initiatives and programs dealing with reconciliation,
     culture, education and youth as well as volunteering and civic engagement.
   - Support the external coordination of existing partnerships between relevant B&H stakeholders (government, civil society, private sector
     and the international community in B&H, including the UN system). Under the guidance of the Political Advisor - Peace and Development
     the UNV will support the exploration of entry points for linking local initiatives to B&H-wide institutions, structures and processes.
   - Perform an array of duties that support UN coordination and effective Peace and Development Team program implementation. These may
     include: assisting in organizing meetings and consultations, organizing and implementing consultation processes with national and
     international partners, and supporting monitoring and evaluation processes.
   - Provide analysis and strategic advice for developing a vision on the role of the UN system to support dialogue and reconciliation in B&H,
     taking into account existing UN programs, inter alia related to local communities, democratic governance, security, justice, returns, youth
     civic engagement and volunteering and area-based development.
   - Conduct quality research, collection and preparation of relevant data and documents.
   - Strengthen knowledge and understanding of the influence and impact of voluntary action and citizen engagement in local / municipal level
     peace building initiatives and programmes, and/or peace monitoring processes – particularly dealing with reconciliation, culture,
     education and youth;
   - Network and build relationships with local organizations, groups or individuals and supporting and/or participating in local volunteering
     initiatives to peacebulding initiative and/or project;
   - Promote or advise local groups to the availability and use of the UNV online volunteering modality, or encourage relevant local individuals
     and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible;


Requirements

   - At least 22 years of age (at commencement of duties);
   - Undergraduate Degree from an accredited academic institution in Political or Social Sciences field;
   - Experience: At least 2 years of previous working experience with national and international interlocutors (i.e. international community,
     civil sector, public institutions) is required;
   - Strong communication, strategic thinking, public relations and advisory skills, including written and presentations is required;
   - Demonstrated networking and partnership building skills are required;
   - Strong expertise in coordinating activities is required;
   - Relevant, proven work experience in the UN system is an asset;
   - Peace building and conflict transformation experience is an asset;
   - Experience in the diplomatic and political sectors isan asset;
   - Demonstrates commitment to UN and UNDP’s mission, vision and values;
   - Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability.
   - Shares knowledge and experience;
   - Actively works towards continuing personal learning and development in one or more practice areas;
   - Acts on learning plan and applies newly acquired skills.
