PHD SCHOLARSHIP IN ENGINEERING IN SYDNEY

Description

This project will primarily be conducted in the Centre for Health Technologies at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) and the Brain & Mind Research Institute at the University of Sydney. Freezing of Gait (FOG) affects half of all patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) with episodes causing the feet to feel glued to the ground leading to a significant falls risk. The mechanisms underlying FOG are not well understood and current treatments are usually ineffective. Combining brain wave recording, eye-tracking and functional brain scanning we will identify the changes that precipitate an episode of FOG allowing the development of a non-invasive device to prevent falls.


Eligibility

Applicants must have a relevant Honours 1 or Honours 2A degree or equivalent in a relevant field of biomedical/electrical/computer systems engineering. Welcomed to apply are citizens of Australia, New Zealand, as well as graduates from all over the world. However, the candidates should demonstrate good communication skills, good team work ethics, ability to work across differing but related projects in a collaborative manner, and an understanding of clinical translation from basic science. Candidates are preferred who have already had some experience with clinical populations, and experience with bioscience statistics.


Scholarship

$30,393 per annum for 3 years are given to the successful applicant. The aim of the grant is to support the living expenses whilst undertaking PhD research on the project. This scholarship will be associated with a successful 2013 NHMRC Project grant commencing 2014. Tuition fees for successful Australian candidates will be covered by the Research Training Scheme. International candidates may be eligible for an International Research Scholarship that covers tuition fees.
