Background

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), a department of the United Nations Secretariat, is mandated to promote and protect the enjoyment and full realization, by all people, of all rights established in the Charter of the United Nations and in international human rights laws and treaties. OHCHR is inviting applications for the position of a Legal Officer for its office in Prishtinë/Priština.
 
Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Head of Office, the incumbent will perform activities necessary to support OHCHR’s goals in Kosovo. S/he will be posted in the OHCHR-Stand-alone office in Prishtinë/Priština, where s/he will assume her/his functions. S/he will also be required to be present in other parts of Kosovo for specific activities, whenever required.


Responsibilities

   - Provides legal analysis on the legislation applicable in Kosovo and its implementation, based on international human rights standards;
   - Monitors the legislative building process;
   - Takes part in awareness raising and capacity building activities;
   - Contributes to the necessary tasks for the good management of the Office.


Requirements

   - University degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Law.
   - A minimum of five years of progressively responsible  legal experience in working in international/regional/local, governmental/non
     governmental organizations or a law firm on issues related to human rights and  rule of law.
   - Good knowledge of the human rights related applicable laws in Kosovo and practices in the judiciary system;
   - Good knowledge of the legislative process in Kosovo;
   - Good knowledge of the international human rights standards and mechanisms.
   - Fluency in written and spoken English. Fluency in written and spoken Albanian or Serbian (with working knowledge of the other)
