Background Max. Grant amount: EUR 150.000
In the 20th century, plastic has become the most commonly used material and it has extensive use in our daily lives. The characteristics that make plastic so useful such as durability, light weight and low cost, make this material problematic when it comes to the final phase of its life cycle. Dozens of millions of tons of plastic remains end up floating in world oceans broken into micro-plastic, the so-called plastic soup, which can be found in the most remote parts of our oceans. Moreover, plastic is not inert and chemical additives, can migrate into body tissue and enter the food chain. The massive pollution of world oceans with plastic rubble is therefore emerging as a global challenge that requires a global response. A second challenge regarding the use of plastic is linked to conservation of resources. The vast majority of plastic waste in the world is landfilled with the EU being one of the leading actors with some 50% of plastic waste in the Union still being landfilled. Therefore, much energy and processed raw material is wasted instead of being recycled into new products.
