UNDP MACEDONIA/ RFP 15/2013 RIVER BASIN MANAGEMENT PLAN AND PRELIMINARY FLOOD RISK ASSESSMENT FOR STRUMICA RIVER BASIN DISTRICT
Deadline: 11-09-2014
Location: Macedonia

Background
Strumica is one of the four river basin districts defined by the Macedonian Law on Waters. This area is part of a larger transboundary river basin comprising parts in Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia (the Struma/Strymon river system that gravitates toward the Aegean Sea). The river basin district encompasses a total area of 1,649 km2 which accounts for 6.41% of the country’s territory. Its total population is over 120,000 people. The entire basin is characterized by considerable water deficit that results from the changing climate conditions, basin’s significant modifications and the growing water demand for multiple purposes. The declining water quality and flow rates hamper the overall ecological integrity of the system and the services it provides for the society. The changes in the land-use/land cover structure have modified the hydrological regime, increasing the risk of extreme hydrological events such as droughts and floods. Recent studies have confirmed that Strumica River Basin District (SRB) is amongst country’s most vulnerable regions, sensitive to global changes and pressures from human activities.
