CALL FOR PAPERS: “GENOCIDE IN SREBRENICA: TOWARDS A LONG LASTING MEMORY”

Skip Navigation LinksHome - Item
Deadline: 05-01-2015 Location: Bosnia and Herzegovina Back

Description

The 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide will be marked on 11 July 2015. The Srebrenica genocide is the worst massacre that occurred on European soil since the Holocaust.

Twenty years on, the society in Bosnia and Herzegovina is faced with complex questions of justice, denial and reconciliation. The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina have prosecuted dozens of Bosnian Serb Army and Police officers. This includes high-ranking generals, officers and direct perpetrators. However, the question of political responsibility as well as direct responsibility still remains.

During the conference questions will open up the floor for dialogue about genocide denial, collective memory and remembrance as well as to establish a network of scholars and researchers working on these issues. It will be an opportunity for exchange and discussion of ideas, theoretical and empirical findings, as well as methodological approaches focusing on post-genocide society in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as in the diaspora. The organizers particularly encourage proposals covering following topics:

   - Forms and Methods of Genocide Denial;
   - Collective Memory: Comparative Analysis;
   - Ideology behind Genocide: Classification, Symbolization and Dehumanization of Bosniaks;
   - Memorials and Monuments: Comparative Analysis;
   - Life after Genocide: Bosniak Widows and Survivors.
