PHD STUDENTSHIP IN PSYCHOLOGY AT THE CARDIFF UNIVERSITY

Description

The title of this project is “PhD studentship in exploring and expanding statistical methods and their applications”. Statistics are a core part of inference in the behavioural and social sciences. They play an integral role in the interpretation of the results of experiments, observations, and are used in models used to understand human behaviour. The quality of science therefore depends critically on the quality of the statistical methods in use, their match to the questions that researchers have, and the level of understanding researchers have of these methods. The goal of this project is to explore and expand statistical methods in use by behavioural and social scientists. There are several possible angles from which this project can be approached, from quantitative psychology and the development of new (particularly Bayesian) methods, to the experimental exploration of statistical cognition: how researchers understand and use statistical information.


Eligibility

Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals and EU students without further restrictions. Applicants for a studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a 2.1 degree or higher in a relevant subject, such as Psychology and Social Sciences. Applications are particularly welcome from applicants with a good first degree or Masters qualification in relevant subjects.


Scholarship

This studentship consists of full UK/EU tuition fees, as well as a Doctoral Stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum – £14,057 per annum (for 2015/16). In addition, you will receive a participant allowance of £300 per annum, conference funding (£100 in Year 1, £600 in Years 2 and 3) a computer and office space.
