Description
Two positions as PhD research fellows in the project Discourses of the Nation and the National are available in the Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages (ILOS) at the University of Oslo in Norway. The department seeks PhD candidates with excellent research qualifications that will contribute to the project. Successful proposals must develop independent projects that lie within the scope of the project Discourses of the Nation and the National. They must concentrate on identity construction in one or more discourse types (e.g., media, political discourse, institutional discourse, literature, academic discourse, cultural and social criticism, or other discourse types) in the past or present, or both, and on the relation between discourse and its sociocultural context. The proposals should apply discourse analysis, narrative analysis, other types of text analysis, or other suitable clearly outlined theories and methods. The region(s) and political units studied must be within the research scope of ILOS and the empirical material in one or more of the following languages: Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, English, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish. Comparative and interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged. The persons appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty’s organized research training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The successful candidate is expected to join the existing research milieu or network and contribute to its developement. The fellowship is for a duration of three years.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the position, applicants must have:
- A Master’s Degree or equivalent in a discipline related to the research profile of the project Discourses of the Nation and the National.
The Master’s Degree has to have been achieved by the time of application;
- Personal suitability and motivation for the position.
In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:
- The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to complete the project within the time frame;
- The applicant’s ability to complete research training;
- Good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary academic communities;
- The project’s academic merit, research-related relevance and innovation.
Fellowship
The position is remunerated by salary of the level 50 – 56 NOK 430,500 – 475,400, (approximately EUR 48,870- 53,970) depending on qualifications. Moreover, research fellows will obtain attractive welfare benefits.
