The new Regulation establishing a financing instrument for the promotion and support of democracy and human rights worldwide, European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR), was adopted by the European Parliament and the Council for the period 2014-2020. It follows and builds on the EIDHR previously established for the period 2007-20131 and on the precedent European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights 2000-2006.
The new EIDHR Strategy 2014-2017 is embedded in the core policy documents that are the Agenda for Change2, the renewed European Neighbourhood Policy, the EU Enlargement Policy, the new EU Approach to Budget Support3 or Europe’s engagement with Civil Society in external relations”4.
