Skip Navigation LinksHome - Item
Deadline: 19-08-2016 Location: Macedonia Back

Background
2015 witnessed unprecedented number of refugees, asylum seekers and other persons in need of international protection, crossing from war affected countries, primarily Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as other affected countries in the Middle East, Asia and Africa into Europe.
The public and the civil society in the country have responded tremendously by mobilizing resources and support for the refugees and have set an example of international solidarity. The entire situation profiled prominent volunteers and organizations.
As of early March 2016, the western Balkan route closed for onward irregular movement, resulting in fragmented arrivals of migrants, including largely persons in need of international protection, who often use risky and dangerous routes and networks to reach their destination countries .
Global objective/Expected Outcome and Main Activities
Since the refugee emergency in 2015, major efforts have been invested by UNHCR and its partners to inform the citizens of the country about the refugees, their rights and obligations, about the suffering and abuses that the refugees have been exposed to prior, during and after leaving the country, as well as about their courage and humanity demonstrated by many people who have assisted them, all along.  However, more needs to be done in order to strengthen solidarity and curb intolerance towards refugees, asylum-seekers, and other persons in need of international protection, mainly among the local population most affected by the presence of refugees and migrants, but also in towns around the country. The project(s) should aim at sensitizing the local population about the needs, motives and rights of refugees. During this process, the local inhabitants’ concerns should also be addressed. The activities could include, but not be limited to education, art, culture, and information of the local population about refugees as well engaging of local inhabitants to support refugees.
