Background
The project aims at generating proxy data to understand the numbers and locations of people with disabilities and the prevalence of specific disabilities. Building on this input, the project will then work in a single area of focus – the six municipalities of the Strumica River Basin, where UNDP is already present on a daily basis – to design and test new ways that institutions can ensure people with disabilities have access to jobs, services and social life. The project will also work to pilot the “rehabilitation” of 20 people with disabilities living in a residential facility in Banja Bansko, as a way of demonstrating that there are productive alternatives to institutionalization.
