Background:
In the last five years, the government of Republic of Macedonia has increased its efforts in combating and preventing the phenomenon of domestic violence in the country. Changes in the legislative framework have been made to adequately address the issue and improve the protective and preventive measures. Besides amendments of laws, the National Strategy for Protection against Domestic Violence (2008-2011) has been adopted in 2008.
United Nations agencies in the country developed a multifaceted Joint Programme on Domestic Violence. The Programme aims at supporting the Government and the civil society sector in improving the inter and intra sectoral coordination and strengthening the mechanisms for prevention of violence and provision of adequate victim support services. One of the main focus areas of the National Strategy is the improvement of the statistics on domestic violence in the country, an objective also supported with this programme.
Objective:
The objective of this assignment is to carry out a population based survey using a questionnaire already designed by the UN Domestic violence team and a national and international consultant.
The survey will be conducted on a representative sample designed by the State Statistical Office of Republic of Macedonia. The required sample size is 2000+ respondents with minimum 15 years of age. The NGO/Survey Company is expected to conduct testing of the questionnaire and carrying out the survey.
The NGO/Survey Company will do the field work, make adequate quality controls and process the data. The NGO/Survey Company will make the cross tabulations required by the UN Domestic violence team in collaboration with the national and international consultant.
The survey is supposed to yield several types of information such as:
- Characteristics of the household (living conditions and standard of living);
- Respondents’ relationships (past and present marital/relationship status);
- History of psychological abuse of the respondent;
- History of physical abuse of the respondent;
- History of sexual abuse of the respondent;
- Attitudes and knowledge regarding relations between genders and violent actions against women and domestic violence;
- Satisfactions with services (types and quality of (non)institutional protection);
- The awareness of the ongoing campaign for preventing and reporting domestic violence.
