Description:
The British Scholarship Trust is a registered charity which awards scholarships to post-graduate students from the former Yugoslavia in order to pursue specialist studies for short periods in the United Kingdom. The Trust allocates between 10 and 15 stipends each year. Study periods are normally from three to six months. The stipend normally covers maintenance expenses and in some cases library or 'bench' fees. APPLICANTS WHO WISH TO TAKE FULL-TIME TAUGHT COURSES ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR OUR GRANTS. The Trust is unable to cover the fees of full-time taught courses.
Scholarship
The normal grant for the current academic year is £800 per month (£915 for placements in London). It is intended to cover living expenses. The grants are modest in size but students can be expected to live reasonably comfortably on the grant. Tuition fees are NOT covered but some other fees charged by the host institution (bench fees, library use, etc.) may be met by the Trust. Travel expenses to and from the placement are covered by the candidates themselves or their home institutions. The monthly grant payments are made by arrangement with the Treasurer of the Trust.
Eligibility
Prospective candidates must be from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro & Serbia and under thirty (30) years of age on 1st October in the school year of the study visit.
The main criteria for the final selection of the candidates are:
-Merit (academic achievement)
-Command of English
-Relevance of the profile of your research to the needs of the region
-The potential benefit of the visit to your research.
Preference is given to candidates who have not previously studied abroad and to candidates who have made contact with the institution they wish to visit in the UK.
The Trust will help with obtaining visas where necessary, but travel expenses to the UK and to the British place of education will be borne by the students or, if employed, by their own institution.
It is strongly recommended that applicants make preliminary contact with a British university or at least identify one or more institutions in the UK where they would be able to carry out their research. Wherever possible, they are asked to make their own arrangements for their stay directly with the host institution, requesting a placement as a “visiting scholar”. Please remember that the Trust cannot pay tuition fees for taught courses. Preference is given to students engaged on research projects, based in their home country.
