European Research Council (ERC) grants are available to support researchers in carrying out frontier research projects.
The European Research Council (ERC) is a European funding initiative, designed to support the best scientists, engineers and scholars in Europe. Its mandate is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-initiated frontier research across all fields of research, on the basis of scientific excellence.
ERC Advanced Investigator Grant (ERC Advanced Grant)
- encourages and supports excellent, innovative investigator-initiated research projects by leading advanced investigators across the EU
Member States and Associated Countries. This funding scheme complements the Starting Grant scheme by targeting the population of
researchers who have already established themselves as being independent research leaders in their own right.
In brief:
Research proposal: pioneering frontier research in any field of science, engineering and scholarship
Principal Investigator: candidates can be of any nationality, must be scientifically independent and have a recent research track-record and profile which identifies them as leaders in their respective field(s) of research
Host organisation: legally recognised public or private research organisation situated in an EU Member State or an Associated Country. The Associated Countries are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina , Croatia, Iceland, Israel, Faroe Islands, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Norway, Republic of Montenegro, Serbia, Switzerland, and Turkey.
Funding: up to EUR 3.5 M per grant
Duration: up to 5 years
Calls for proposals: published annually in autumn with deadlines in spring
How to apply?
An ERC grant application should be submitted by a single PI with the support, and on behalf of, the host institution. It can be submitted only in response to an open call for proposals via the web-based Electronic Proposal Submission Service (EPSS).
