GEO/ WORKSHOP ON HUMANE RETURN OF MIGRANTS AND DETENTION CENTRE MANAGEMENT IN GEORGIA

Mechanisms to facilitate the return of migrants from Georgia to their countries of origin, as well
as management of migrant detention centres, are two of the topics of a workshop in Tbilisi on 24
and 25 April organized by the EU-funded project “Supporting the establishment of effective
readmission management in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia”.
The workshop, hosted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), targets Georgian
government officials, representatives from immigration departments in EU Member States and
international organizations and NGOs, who will facilitate the exchange of concrete information
and share best practices.
Detailed presentations, highlighting effective practices of managing return of migrants, migrant
detention centres and presentation of practical solutions to identified challenges to protecting
migrants’ rights will be presented by five experts from immigration departments of Belgium, Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Poland.
The representative of the Secretariat to the State Commission on Migration Issues of Georgia will introduce the law “On the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons” and the plans of the Government of Georgia to combat irregular migration.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia will present the progress made in the application of the electronic readmission management software system, while the NGO “Innovations and Reforms Centre” will present the interim results of the monitoring of the implementation of the readmission agreement in Georgia...(link)
