The newly launched EU-funded regional programme “Med Culture” held two meetings with
Palestinian partners this week, with representatives of the Palestinian Ministry of Culture and
line ministries on Wednesday 21 May in Ramallah, as well as with Palestinian cultural
practitioners on Thursday 22 May at the Bethlehem Peace Centre.
The main objective of these consultations is to jointly identify priority areas, and
choreograph corresponding action plans to be implemented in partnership with the Med
Culture programme through the four years of the programme’s life span.
Palestinians have always perceived culture as a tool of “liberation” and affirmation in the face of the increasingly difficult reality of Israeli occupation, the absence of statehood, the restrictions on the mobility of Palestinian artists, audiences and products, and the fragmentation of the Palestinian territory, all of which weigh heavily on the Palestinian cultural scene.
In response to the situation and within the framework of EU Assistance to Palestinians, the European Union has been providing funds to both local and regional initiatives in a wide range of cultural sectors such as dance, music, film festivals, theatre production, exhibitions, training workshops, etc...(link)
