Description
TMN offers visiting fellowships allowing individual European journalists to spend up to three months in the United States. Fellows usually spend one month at CSIS in Washington, and are then based at schools of journalism in other areas of the United States, with extensive opportunities to travel and meet a wide range of Americans. The aim is not to enable journalists to engage in daily news coverage, but rather to help them gain insights into the diverse attitudes of Americans and the ways these attitudes influence the formation of American social and political viewpoints.
Requirements
Fellowships are offered on an individual basis and may be applied for at any time. Candidates should explain what they hope to achieve from their visits to the United States the main themes they want to pursue, and the general kind of reporting they wish to undertake. Candidates may come from any European country, must speak fluent English, have a valid driver’s license, and will preferably work for an influential media outlet at the national or regional level. A telephone interview may be required. Fellowships are normally awarded to journalists with little previous experience in the United States.
Responsibilities
The program offers participants independence to draw their own conclusions about the United States on the basis of wide-ranging, on -the-spot investigations. It gives journalists the chance, and the time,to research reports and features on different aspects of the United States, including political, economic, business, and social trends that are not commonly covered in depth in the European media. Fellows are usually expected to produce articles or broadcast reports while in the United States, and partner organizations will help with advice and local contacts if requested. There will be no effort to influence the conclusions drawn by the visiting journalists or the manner of their reporting.Fellows may also be asked to give talks to American journalism students at their host organizations. On their return to Europe, fellows are invited to become part of an expanding network of journalists with an interest in U.S., European, and transatlantic issues.
