Description
The European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (E.MA) - organised by the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) - is:
- An intensive one-year course aimed at educating up to 100 professionals annually in the field of human rights and democratisation;
- An action- and policy-oriented approach to learning that combines legal, political, historical, anthropological, and philosophical
perspectives with skills building activities;
- An in-depth study of the following areas: Human Rights Institutions, Mechanisms and Standards; Human Rights in Context: Historical,
Philosophical, Religious and Anthropological Perspectives; Democratisation; Human Rights and Globalisation; Human Rights and
Security;
- A study trip to familiarize with human rights field work;
- Specialised supervised research for the Master’s thesis in one of the 41 participating universities;
- A Joint Degree conferred by prestigious European universities;
- The foundation for a successful career in national, international, governmental, inter- and non-governmental organisations, as well as
academic institutions dealing with human rights and democratisation.
E.MA is both a residential and an exchange programme:
- First Semester in Venice, Italy
- Second semester in one of the 41 participating universities within the members states of the European Union
Admission Criteria
E.MA is open to EU and non-EU citizens. The criteria used during the selection process are: academic ability and background; experience; language competence and motivation.
Applicants are required to hold a university degree of a high standard in a field relevant to human rights, including disciplines in law, social sciences and the humanities and must have a minimum of 180 ECTS (Bachelor/General Degree).
Candidatures can be considered as long as the applicant has obtained a degree corresponding to:
- 180 ECTS credits (generally a 3-year course) or
- 240 ECTS credits (generally a 4-year course) or
- A combination of a degree of 180 ECTS and relevant proven additional experience or studies (such as 1-year MA or summer courses)
Costs and Funding
The amount of the tuition fee for the academic year 2014/2015 is €4900 (plus enrolment fee of €150). Tuition fees cover the following: all courses of the European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation, both in the first and second semesters; the reading materials for the first semester; tutorship; access to the EIUC specialised library; individual access to our closed e-learning environment; use of available IT facilities, field trip.
Students bear the responsibility to secure their full living and housing expenses prior to their arrival in Venice (estimated at a minimum of €850 per month).
Funding: EIUC offers financial support in the form of a partial contribution towards living expenses and/or a full or partial tuition waiver. This type of financial support is awarded to a limited number of students (up to 10) on the basis of academic achievement, need and geographical distribution.
