PHD FELLOWSHIP IN GUT MICROBIOTA AND INFLAMMATORY DISEASE IN OSLO

Description

The Norwegian PSC Research Center is a world-leading research environment dedicated to research on the chronic liver disease primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). The research center counts 10-15 researchers from several countries and specialties organized in three groups covering both basic and clinical aspects of the disease. As a part of the research group on genomics and metagenomics, the PhD student will also be part of the broader environment at Research Institute of Internal Medicine, where multiple strong groups perform translational research in inflammatory diseases in a well-equipped modern laboratory. Norwegian Research Council funded project NORGUT, a 3-year engagement as PhD student (SKO 1017) is available from autumn 2015 at Norwegian PSC Research Center, Division of Cancer Medicine, Surgery and Transplantation, Oslo University Hospital (OUH) and University of Oslo (UIO).

The project NORGUT aims to characterise the gut microbiota of several diseases with manifestations in the gastrointestinal tract (including PSC) and how the microbiota influences key metabolic factors in these conditions. Besides detailed sequencing-based profiling of the gut microbiota, parallel studies of biochemical footprints of bacterial activity in the blood will provide new data on how gut microbes cause or modify systemic disease. The project leader Johannes R Hov and the group of genomics and metagenomics have established a complete pipeline for microbiota studies and collaborate with both national and international experts in metabolomics. The PhD candidate will work to answer several different research questions arising in NORGUT, using materials and tools that are already available.


Eligibility

   - Candidate with an MD, MSc or equivalent education;
   - The candidate must be qualified for admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo;
   - Strong motivation;
   - High working capacity;
   - Ability to work independently;
   - Good writing and oral communication skills in English;
   - Good computer skills would be an advantage but not a prerequisite.
